Solemnity of Saint Benedict
The Solemnity of Saint Benedict, which commemorates the day on which he went to God, is normally celebrated on March 21, the date of his death. Because this fell within the sacred time of Holy Week this year, the celebration of Saint Benedict’s Solemnity is transferred to April 5, after the solemn celebrations of the Sacred Triduum and the Octave of Easter.
As we reflect on the great blessing which Saint Benedict is to the Church and to our community here at Saint Louis Abbey, let us ask the intercession of this great saint on us all, that we may enter ever more deeply into his spirit of contemplative prayer, of mutual charity, and of service:
Loving and gracious God, we praise and thank You that you are The Creator of the Universe, and our Father who loves us and has sent Your Son Jesus to save us from our sins.
You gave the Church Saint Benedict, as a leader and master in the spiritual life for a countless number of followers. Filled as he was with the spirit of all the just, You flooded him with the splendor of Your light. In the intense radiance of this light, his mind was freed of hindrance and he was able to see all creation gathered together in a single ray of light. Because of this, the entire monastic company in every part of the world sings out its joy, and the Virtues on high, with all the angels, continuously praise Your glory in song.
Stir up in your Church, O Lord, the spirit that animated Saint Benedict. Fill us again with Your Holy Spirit, in order that we may learn to love what he loved and practice what he taught. As You filled Saint Benedict with the spirit of all the righteous, grant us, who celebrate his life and all the good You have accomplished through him, his followers down through the centuries, and his holy Rule, to be filled with his spirit, that we may faithfully accomplish Your holy Will. Amen.
