Additional Summer Course Offerings
Mr. Brandon McLaughlin, of our science department, is offering two enrichment courses this summer, adding to our already lengthy list of summer opportunities for high school students.
Survey of Neuroscience
In this course, we will be exploring the human brain and nervous system. The human brain is the most complex known living structure in the universe. Storing more information than any supercomputer or social network, the brain has enabled humans to walk on the moon, compose masterpieces in the arts, and extend our own life expectancy by decades through biomedical research. We will begin by discussing basic anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and then make our way into looking at sensation & perception, learning & memory, the effects of stress on the brain, addiction, psychopathology, neuroethics, and beyond. Join us in exploring just how that 3-pound hunk of fat, water, and flesh is capable of achieving such incredible things as well as how our understanding of the brain has progressed over the years.

Philosophy: Thinking About Thinking
Have you ever wondered why you think the way you do? Believe what you believe? Act the way you act? Well, now is the time to get closer to finding answers to these burning questions. Thinking About Thinking will be a course designed to help students further understand their everyday thought processes and the influences that shape them. We are all a product of our biology and the experiences that we have had throughout our lives. Every moment that you have lived so far has somehow contributed to who you are today and where your place in the world is. Join us in exploring these questions and in looking at some of the philosophical work that, together with current research in neuroscience and genetics, has shaped our understanding of the mind.
